My Life Since 2000

I have made major changes in my life since 2000.  In 2004 I bought a 4-acre piece of the ranch I was living on and had a house built on it—and for the first time became a homeowner.  I retired from teaching the summer of 2007. Since then I have become involved in the local Friends of the Library and at the Olympia Senior Center, where I teach a Northwest History class. I am part of the Forever Young senior rock and roll choir, participate in two Page-Turners book discussion groups, and have returned to writing poetry. In addition I am an active member of St. Mike’s Olympia, where I sing in one of the choirs and belong to the Prayer Shawl Ministry. I am enjoying every day of my retirement, and happily making new friends who are not schoolchildren or their parents, and writing something other than lesson plans.

The past 10 years have found us enjoying retirement.  We have done a lot of traveling with our Airstream trailer and several cruises.  My husband has taken up the hobby of wood carving so we do several art shows and demonstrations a year and events with other carvers.

We have 5 grandchildren and 5-1/2 great-grandchildren.  They keep us young.

"There is nothing the matter with me
I'm as healthy as can be.
I have arthritis in both my knees
and when I talk, I talk with a wheeze.
My pulse is weak, and my blood is thin
Buy I'm awfully well for the shape I'm in."

Ten years is a long time at our age.  I still continue to hunt and fish.  I have flown to places like Alaska and Montana for trophy hunts.

2000 Retired from the Boeing Company as the Safety, Health and Environmental Manager.

2001 Restored a 1965 Stingray Roadster Corvette from the bottom up which I still own.

2008 Turned my Smoked Cheese and Salmon hobby of 40 years into a full-time business adventure.  It has traveled to Japan, Chine and all over America.  It will also be in the Washington State Restaurant Association very soon.

2009 Build a Lindal Cedar home on five acres in Buckley just east of South Prairie with a gorgeous view of Mt. Rainier and the Cascades.

Married my life partner Karla, November 28, 2009 in our new home after a 20 year long engagement.  You have to be sure.  LIFE IS GOOD.

Ten years?

It has been a challenging decade health wise, but I'm still here. God bless medical researchers and surgeons!

I moved to downtown Seattle seven years ago to get some excitement in my life. I live a couple of blocks from the Pike Place Market and a block away from Westlake Park. Since moving here several of my friends have also moved (retired) to the city and more are coming this year.

I love the city. The frequent fire/crime/aid sirens are a bit of distraction at times. But as long as they aren't coming for me they are just part of the experience.

I still have a management training  business and I'm still working on my team leadership book, "The Excitement Program!"  Both have had a number of starts and stops through the decade as health issues have needed to be addressed. The business is more of a hobby, but the book is a great retirement plan if I can finish it and get it published. But in either case, they give me a purpose and  keep me busy.

All and all I've enjoyed my life the past ten years. This year however, words could never properly express how disappointed I am to be missing my first reunion. I enjoyed them all.

I loved the three years we spent together five decades ago.

I hope you have a great time at the reunion.

In 2002, I retired from Weyerhaeuser after 18 enjoyable years.

Ron and I will have 13 grandchildren between us so there isn’t any time to work!!   Two of my children (Brady and Carrie and families) are within walking distance of our home in Browns Point and the other (Byron) is in Gig Harbor.  I’m able to attend the grand children’s sports, church, school and music activities on a regular basis which is wonderful.

I’m still active at Steel Lake Presbyterian church as a Deacon, a member of the Personnel Committee, and Chancel Choir.  I do lots of special music in quartets, trio’s and solos and direct the choir if our paid director is unable to for any reason.   I sing with the Federal Way Chorale and have for 15 years since its inception.

As far as traveling we have been to Italy three times and several trips within the US. Last year I sang with approximately 100 other singers in a beautiful Basilica in Rome on Easter Sunday.  It was a wonderful experience and all three of my children were there.  The work called “The Birth of Christ” was written by a Federal Way graduate. One of the Narrators in Rome was Jim Caviezel.  We were all enamored by that!!    I also did the same work in Dublin with a similar group a few years earlier with Liam Neeson as the narrator remotely from N.Y.

My grade school friend, Heather Nelson Derrick, and I get together as often as we can both with husbands and without.   We cherish our longtime and special friendship.

"She lived the life of service and was successful in that life."

This is our ninth year of retirement from teaching.  We're thoroughly enjoying our time, but are more active than ever.  We traveled last summer to visit our oldest son, Steve and family in Denmark.  Our other son, Scott, toured in Germany with his family and then we all met in Berlin.

Our days are filled with bridge, book club, gardening, trap shooting and entertaining family and friends.  We've been blessed with good health and we're looking forward to a busy 2010.
