The Beginning:  In 1960, we, the graduating class of Federal Way High School, embarked on our life’s journey.  Like most high school graduates, we did not really know what we were going to pursue, but we were ready to go.  We faced the realization of the Vietnam War; the prospect of college or work; “life in the 60’s”; and we did so without computers, cell phones, ipods, email, or the internet.

The Last Decade:  The last decade was really the first decade of the 21st century.  We have seen our lives drastically change over the years.  Now we do have computers, cell phones, ipods, email, and the internet—all of which we feel that we need to survive in our world.  We have seen the assassination of John F. Kennedy; Neil Armstrong walk on the moon; the election of our country’s first African American president; and the massive change in our lives caused by the disaster which occurred on September 11, 2001, when terrorists attacked the Twin Towers in New York the pentagon, and a failed attempt on the White House.  This horrible attack resulted in the deaths of 2974 innocent people.  As we celebrate our 50th class reunion, I think it is imperative that we take a brief moment to reflect on the magnitude of September 11, 2001 and remember those who lost their lives on that date.

Me, My Family, and My Work:  After high school I went to college on a football scholarship and also played on the college golf team.  Today I still actively participate in one of those activities.  Following college, I attended Law School at Willamette University graduating in 1968.  I immediately was called into the Air Force and served five years as a judge advocate (lawyer). I was a frequent visitor to Southeast Asia during my service, especially when I was stationed on Guam. I have been married to my real wife, Dorothy, for twenty-four years. (I had a practice wife a number of years before Dorothy.)  I have two children (from my practice marriage) who both got married in the last couple of years.  My daughter is an engineer with a large computer programming company, and my son is a body piercer who has been active in securing legislation in the State of Washington regulating that profession.  In 1980 I started a business in Ferndale, WA. which utilized a proprietary exterior fire retardant to pressure treat cedar shakes and shingles for sale in jurisdictions where fire was a concern. That business did very well until the recent economic crash that our nation and the world have endured.  Since our business follows the housing market we have had a very difficult three year period which has caused us to lay off many long time employees.  We certainly hope that the corner has turned and things are headed back in a positive direction.

This reunion preparation has enabled me to renew contact with an old friend and classmate who I have not talked to in thirty years.  Carolyn Perrone (Spatra) and her new husband (to me) were up to visit us at our business in Ferndale last month.  This was a result of Carolyn taking the initiative to call me and updating me on the reunion plans and her life.  It was very nice to talk to her.

We have all learned how important health is in our lives.  Fortunately, both Dorothy and I enjoy good health.  I certainly wish the best of health for all of my classmates.  Perhaps we will see many of you at the reunion.  Best regards.

What I’ve Been Doing for the Past Ten Years by
Chuck Breider

In September 2003 I completed a 40 year career with the Federal Government.

I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to get things out of those hard plastic packages!

I’ve taken a couple cruises, Alaska and the Western Caribbean

I help elderly friends with home repairs and yard clean-up projects. I spend some time involved in a program to feed the homeless.

I play “professional” cribbage so I travel around the country to different cribbage tournaments.

I spend a lot of time lying awake trying to overcome sleep apnea.

Much time spent arranging for, preparing for and undergoing colonoscopies and endoscopies.

I take advantage of the beautiful New Mexico weather golfing and riding my H D. Summer weekends I attend car shows showing my 1948 Plymouth “low-rider.”

At least 2 trips a year to Seattle/Tacoma area to spend time with my great little grandson, his family, my nieces and nephew and my beautiful sister.

Lots of hours at the gym!

I enjoy worshipping at Christ United Methodist Church and Calvary Chapel of Albuquerque.

I write for the Federal Way Historical Society’s quarterly newsletter.

I vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

I spend a lot of time trying to find stuff!

I enjoy spending time with my daughter Kimberly when she visits from Switzerland.

Camano Island, WA

Let's see, *** Ten years ago I went a couple of rounds with breast cancer and I won!

I then moved from Palm Desert, CA to Santa Fe, NM where I worked for the Penitentiary of New Mexico as a Psych 1 and dealt with inmates housed in Maximum security all the way to Minimum security.  Quite a challenging and rewarding experience.  I owned an authentic old adobe home complete with 18" thick walls and brick floors layed right on the sand/dirt. After my Dad died I used part of my inheritance and remodeled and really started getting into landscape design and gardening.  I took a few trips including Bali and Japan as well as a few to various parts of Mexico.

I moved back to the Pacific Northwest almost 5 years ago and have about 3 acres on the south tip of Camano Island to tend.  I am quite involved in the National Wildlife Federation's Backyard Wildlife Habitat project as well as keeping busy with our local garden club.  My yard will be on the Island Garden Tour this summer. I am taking a Master Gardener class this Winter and will be volunteering hours to them over the next year at least.

My kids are all grown, married and have families of their own and we get together fairly often. I actually now have 1 Great Grandchild.

I have some great friends and some go all the way back to Grade school.  A few of us manage to get together each year around Christmas just to catch-up. It is something that I really look forward to. That and the steamed clams and crab dip!
I continue to work on a part-time basis so I can have some discretionary income to spend on just fun stuff.  I've decided I am not a "Boomer" more like a "Zoomer"  My new Prius helps with that and I get over 50 mpg. Woohoo!!

Life is great and so is my health.  If and when that changes I think I'll just drink some Oleander tea and say goodbye.  I wonder if "they" will let me get away with that?

To: F.W.H.S. Class of 1960

We are presently in Minnesota to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends.

The last 10 years have been spent in Knoxville, Tn.  Prior to that we lived nearly 40 years in Minnesota.  We have 4 daughters, 3 in Knoxville and 1 in Minnesota.  We have 3 grandsons, 2 in Knoxville and 1 in Minnesota.

We retired in the mid 1990's.  In October of 1999 we moved to Knoxville.  In addition to family activities I volunteer at our local branch library and am involved in various activities at Fountain City United Methodist Church.  I also enjoy reading, (mostly mysteries), and crocheting.  My husband stays busy doing woodwork and being the "repairman" for furniture, toys, etc.

Sorry we will be unable to attend the reunion festivities.

After retiring in 1999 from 35 years at Boeing. Kathy & I sold our home on Lake Kathleen , east of Renton, and bought a 36 ft motor home with a Saturn tow and toured the U.S. for 3 years. We visited every state capital and many historical sites.

Returning to the Pacific North West in 2002, we sold our RV and we purchased a condo at Providence Point in Issaquah near family and friends. With one son & a granddaughter living in Puyallup and the other son living in Seattle we always knew we would return to the Pacific N.W.

We still enjoy traveling and in the last few years have traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, Fiji, Russia, sailed up the Amazon River, visited the Eastern Block countries, and most South American countries. As much as we enjoyed visiting these places there is no place like the U.S.A.
